Descent from the Cross. Colonial School, New Granada. New Spanish Baroque. 17th century. Oil on canvas. A deeply emotional composition depicts a religious scene in which the dead Christ is supported by the Virgin Mary and Saint John, whilst several angels look down from above amongst the clouds with mournful expressions. The pyramidal arrangement of the figures, centred on Christ’s lifeless body, creates a compositional axis that accentuates the spiritual tension. The delicate gestures of the hands, the anguished faces, and the luminosity emanating from the bodies highlight the drama of the moment. The meticulous brushwork in the folds of the cloaks and the rich colour palette of reds, greens and whites reveal a careful execution, characteristic of Baroque devotional art. The chiaroscuro gently shapes the forms and reinforces the intimate and sacred atmosphere. This work is part of the 17th-century Counter-Reformation aesthetic, which sought to move the viewer and foster piety through visual pathos. Dimensions: 80 × 60 cm.
