Description
Immaculate Virgin. Spanish School. 18th–19th centuries.
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 54 x 61 cm; framed: 64 x 67 cm. The Virgin stands upon a crescent moon and a dragon, surrounded by cherubs who crown her and accompany her ascent. She wears a white tunic and a blue mantle that flows around her, with her hands crossed over her chest in a gesture of humility. The warm, golden background envelops the scene in a mystical glow. Symbolic elements from the Litany of Loreto are evident, such as the palm and rose held by angels. The work reflects the Spanish Baroque iconography of the Immaculate Conception, adapted to the sensibilities of the 18th and 19th centuries.
