Description
Sleeping Child Jesus, Spanish Baroque School, 17th century
Polychrome wood carving. Dimensions: 15 x 30 x 11 cm. A delicate depiction of the Christ Child reclining on rocky ground, resting his head on one arm in a state of deep repose. The composition conveys an atmosphere of tenderness and contemplation, whilst the child’s anatomy is rendered with naturalness and gentle transitions in form. The relaxed posture and introspective nature of the figure symbolically foreshadow future episodes of the Passion, a common iconographic device in Baroque sculpture. The polychromy, now softened by time, retains the warmth necessary to emphasise the figure’s humanity. The piece is a remarkable example of 17th-century Spanish devotional sculpture, in which emotion, symbolism and naturalism are integrated into a work of intense religious sensitivity. Dimensions: 15 x 30 cm.
