Description
Exquisite Pietà, Late Gothic Hispano-Flemish School, 16th century
Polychrome and gilded wood carving. Measures 23 x 13 x 8 cm. This devotional sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of Christ in her lap after the Descent from the Cross, in keeping with the traditional iconography of the Pietà. The composition conveys a marked sense of spiritual contemplation, with Mary seated and enveloped in flowing drapery that cradles the horizontal body of her Son. The remaining traces of polychromy and gilding lend visual depth to the work, whilst the Virgin’s serene and restrained expression reinforces the meditative nature of the scene. The carving exhibits characteristics typical of religious sculpture from the transition between the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods, evident in its frontal composition and the schematic treatment of volumes. Its value lies both in the symbolic intensity of the representation and in its status as a testament to 16th-century Spanish devotional imagery. Dimensions: 23 x 13 cm.
