Description
Important Virgin and Child – Based on Gothic models from Mechelen
Carved, polychromed and gilded oak. Measures 41 x 14 x 8 cm. An elegant depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child on her left arm, characterised by a refined sense of verticality and a marked sculptural sensibility typical of Flemish workshops. The figure displays a complex interplay of folds that envelop the body with rhythm and movement, whilst the Child appears dressed in a golden tunic with a solemn demeanour. The delicate facial features, the flowing hair, and the richness of the preserved polychromy reveal a remarkably high-quality execution. The composition combines naturalism and spirituality, essential qualities of sculpture produced in Brussels during the 16th century, one of the main artistic centres of the Low Countries. The masterful handling of form, together with the elegance of the proportions, places this work within the finest tradition of Flemish Renaissance sculpture, widely admired for its technical and expressive refinement. Dimensions: 41 x 14 cm.
