Description
Immaculate Virgin, Indo-Portuguese colonial, Goan colonial school, 17th century Carved ivory. Listed under CITES. The figure measures 17 x 6 x 4 cm; overall dimensions 28 x 11 x 11 cm. This sculpture depicts the Immaculate Conception in prayer, with her hands clasped over her chest and an elegant frontal pose. The Virgin appears elevated on a celestial sphere supported by a richly decorated base, following iconographic models widely disseminated in the Spanish American viceroyalty. The delicate craftsmanship of the piece allows for extraordinary precision in the facial features, the rendering of the hair, and the arrangement of the folds of the mantle. The composition combines technical refinement and profound spirituality, qualities characteristic of Goan sculpture intended for private devotion. The work reflects the synthesis of European traditions and local sensibilities developed in Mexican colonial workshops during the 17th century. Dimensions: 17 x 6 cm.
