Description
Saint John the Baptist, Spanish School, 18th century
Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 97 x 46 x 41 cm. Devotional sculpture of Saint John the Baptist, identifiable by the camel skin that partially covers his body and by the presence of the lamb, a symbol of Christ and an essential attribute of his iconography. The saint is depicted in a meditative pose, with his head bowed and a contemplative expression, creating a composition of intense spirituality. The angular folds of the cloak and the expressive modelling of the anatomy reinforce the dramatic character of the image. The polychromy features warm tones that enrich the whole and emphasise the contrasts between the different surfaces. The carving displays a notable Baroque tradition in the expressiveness of the gestures and in the pursuit of direct communication with the faithful. The piece is an interesting example of Spanish religious imagery intended for private worship or small devotional settings.
