Description
Virgin and Child with Crowns, Valencian School, 18th century
Carved, polychromed and gilded wood. Dimensions: 103 x 35 x 26 cm. This Marian image depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child in a composition characterised by great balance and devotional tenderness. Both figures are crowned, reinforcing their regal and celestial character. The Virgin wears flowing robes adorned with floral decoration and ornamental motifs in the Baroque tradition, whilst the Child adopts a close and affectionate posture. Their faces display serene and delicately modelled features, conveying a profound sense of spiritual tenderness. The polychromy and gilding add chromatic richness and enhance the quality of the carving. The work reflects the continuity of Hispanic religious imagery, where formal elegance and theological symbolism are integrated into an image conceived to foster contemplation and devotion.
