Description
Child Jesus, Saviour of the World, Spanish School, 18th century Carved, polychromed, gilded and brocaded wood with repoussé silver appliqués. Measures 101 x 39 x 30 cm. An important devotional sculpture of the Christ Child depicted as the Saviour of the World, standing upright in a gesture of blessing whilst holding a silver staff or sceptre, a symbol of his divine authority. The figure is notable for the richness of its brocaded garments, decorated with delicate gilded plant motifs on a silver background, which lend the surface an extraordinary ornamental quality. The childlike face, with its large, expressive eyes, rosy cheeks and delicate modelling, conveys an intense sense of intimacy and spirituality. The broad silver halo behind the head reinforces the sacred nature of the figure and adds a striking dramatic effect. The composition combines the sweetness typical of the iconography of the Christ Child with a marked ceremonial solemnity, characteristic of Hispanic religious imagery intended for domestic and convent worship. The quality of the carving is evident in the refined treatment of the hands, the definition of the facial features, and the richness of the polychromy, all executed with remarkable technical precision. The work is fully integrated into the Spanish Baroque tradition, where polychromy, gilding and metallic elements enhanced the devotional power of the images. Its excellent presence, unusual size and appeal to collectors make it a standout piece within the realm of Spanish religious sculpture.
