Description
Sculpture carved from lime wood. Christ. 15th century, possibly German. Carved from linden wood with traces of polychromy. Dimensions to be confirmed. An exceptional sculpture of Christ Crucified, belonging to the late Gothic German tradition of the 15th century, originally intended to preside over a devotional ensemble of great liturgical significance. The figure exhibits a marked verticality and pronounced anatomical elongation that intensify the spiritual character of the image, with outstretched arms, head bowed upon the chest, and an expression of serene acceptance of the sacrifice. The modelling of the torso demonstrates a profound knowledge of anatomy, achieved through smooth planes and a stylisation characteristic of Germanic workshops of the Late Middle Ages. The hair and beard are arranged in flowing locks of great technical refinement, whilst the loincloth retains traces of old polychromy that bear witness to its original finish. Of particular importance are the incised characters distributed across the surface of the body, linked to symbolic traditions of Hebrew origin found in certain medieval religious contexts and extremely rare in surviving sculptures from this period. The quality of the carving, the nobility of the material, and the expressive intensity of the composition place this work amongst the most significant examples of Central European sculpture, reflecting the devotional sensibility characteristic of the Late Gothic period. Its iconographic rarity, age, and remarkable visual impact make this sculpture a piece of particular importance for collectors and specialist research.
