Description
Carved wooden sculpture of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, based on Flemish Gothic models, 19th–20th century
Carved wood. Height: 47 cm. This sculpture, modelled on Flemish Gothic sculptures, depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most venerated saints of medieval Christendom. The saint is depicted crowned like a princess of noble lineage, holding a sword—the instrument of her martyrdom—and an open book, a symbol of her wisdom and erudition. At her feet lies the crowned head of the pagan emperor Maxentius, who, according to hagiographic tradition, was spiritually vanquished by the saint. The figure displays an elegant rendering of the drapery, with a pronounced verticality, as well as idealised and serene features that directly recall the models developed in the Low Countries during the 15th and early 16th centuries. The composition, with its remarkable decorative refinement, demonstrates the persistence of Gothic forms in modern historicist sculpture. A work of both devotional and decorative character, carved from wood with particular attention to the iconographic details of Saint Catherine, one of the most frequently depicted saints in late medieval Flemish art.
