Description
AUSTRIAN SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY, IN THE STYLE OF SIMON TROGER (Absam, Tyrol, 1693–1768) – The Beggars
A pair of carved walnut sculptures. Dimensions: 30 x 12 cm each. An interesting pair of folk figures depicting a male and female beggar dressed in traditional Central European clothing. The sculptures are notable for the expressiveness of their faces, the naturalism of their poses, and the dynamic rendering of the folds in their garments—characteristics of genre sculpture developed in the Alpine regions during the 18th century. The subject matter, centred on humble people from everyday life, together with the quality of the carving and the distinctly narrative character of the figures, enables us to link the work to Austrian and Tyrolean production within the artistic circle of Simon Troger, one of the most prominent sculptors of 18th-century Central Europe. Troger achieved great renown for his depictions of peasants, beggars and other ordinary people, designed for collectors’ cabinets and intended to realistically reflect the human types of his time. This pair is a remarkable example of Central European genre sculpture, retaining an attractive patina that enhances the quality of the wood and the virtuosity of the carving.
