Ceremonial shepherd’s trumpet, Benin culture, 19th century Carved and engraved horn with metal inlays. Dimensions: 36 x 12 cm. This interesting shepherd’s trumpet is made from a natural horn, richly decorated with geometric engravings arranged in registers and topped with a highly expressive carved anthropomorphic head. It also features a small metal bird inlay, a symbolic element frequently found in traditional West African art. These instruments were used both for long-distance communication and in ritual ceremonies, community gatherings and events related to traditional authority. The intricate incised decoration and the refined carving reflect the symbolic importance of the object within its cultural context.
