Description
Small mother-of-pearl box/urn with a wax figure of the Baby Jesus, Mexico, 18th century
Polychrome wax, mother-of-pearl, wood, velvet and decorative beads. Mexico, 18th century. Dimensions: 6.5 × 3 × 3.5 cm. A small devotional urn made of mother-of-pearl plaques mounted on a wooden frame, housing a delicate polychrome wax figure of the Christ Child. The interior is lined with red velvet and decorated with beads, in a style characteristic of private devotional objects from New Spain. The figure is reclining in a resting position, protected by a box designed both for its preservation and for display in homes and convents. Urns featuring images of the Christ Child were very popular in New Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries. These pieces combined precious materials with small, intimate sculptures intended for personal prayer, constituting one of the most refined expressions of domestic piety during the viceroyalty. The use of mother-of-pearl, a material highly prized in colonial art, lends the piece considerable aesthetic and ornamental value. It shows signs of wear, loss and alterations typical of its age and devotional use.
