Description
Large putto or sculptural angel in wood, Genoa, Italy, 17th century
Carved, polychromed, lacquered and gilded wood. Dimensions: 66 cm high. This sculpture depicts a putto of striking dynamism, conceived in an ascending pose and captured in full motion, a characteristic perfectly in keeping with the Baroque sensibility that developed in Genoa during the 17th century. The child figure appears semi-nude, with a robust and naturalistic physique, as he turns his torso and raises his arms in a gesture that must originally have been part of a larger decorative or altarpiece ensemble. The treatment of the hair, carved with deep, wavy locks, the expressiveness of the face, and the helical composition reflect the sculptural models disseminated by the Ligurian school during the 17th century, one of the periods of greatest artistic splendour in the Republic of Genoa. The work retains traces of its original polychromy, as well as applications of gilding and lacquer that enriched the surface and helped to enhance the luminous effects characteristic of Baroque sculpture. The quality of the carving and the dynamism of the figure suggest that it originated in Genoese workshops specialising in the production of religious sculptures and decorative elements for churches, oratories and noble palaces. These types of putti were widely used in Baroque ornamental schemes as symbols of celestial glory and the divine presence, playing an important role in the religious scenography of the period. The sculpture is currently displayed on a gilded Louis XVI-style plinth, added after the work was created, which facilitates its display and enhances its decorative character. It is in good overall condition, showing signs of wear and losses consistent with its age which do not affect its expressive power or the artistic quality of the piece.
