Description
Angel torchbearer or candle holder in gilded wood, Venice, Italy, 17th century
Carved and gilded walnut. Dimensions: 52 cm high. This sculpture depicts an angel holding a candle, designed as a support for liturgical lighting, a motif widely used in Venetian religious decoration during the 16th and 17th centuries. Carved from walnut and embellished with gilding, the work displays a refined combination of the formal elegance inherited from the late Renaissance and the growing dynamism characteristic of the early Baroque. The angel is depicted with a graceful and solemn demeanour, designed to be integrated into a decorative ensemble of a religious nature, probably associated with an altar, a private chapel or prestigious liturgical furnishings. The quality of the carving is particularly evident in the treatment of the drapery, arranged in flowing, deep folds, as well as in the delicate execution of the wings and the idealised features of the face. Although created during the first half of the 17th century, the work retains numerous elements characteristic of 16th-century Venetian sculpture, a common feature of artistic production in Venice, where Renaissance models continued to exert a significant influence during the early decades of the 17th century. The combination of precise carving, a richly gilded surface and a balanced composition fully reflects the decorative style developed in Venetian workshops specialising in religious sculpture. These figures of light-bearing angels also possessed profound symbolic meaning, alluding to the role of angels as divine messengers and mediators between the earthly and celestial realms. The quality of the craftsmanship, the nobility of the materials, and the enduring influence of Renaissance models make this piece an excellent example of Venetian decorative sculpture from the first third of the 17th century.
