Description
Art Deco sculpture of a dancer in patinated bronze, KARL PERL (Vienna, 1876–1965), 20th century Patinated bronze on a marble base. Dimensions: 43 cm high. Karl Perl was one of the most representative Austrian sculptors of the early 20th century, developing a body of work closely linked to the aesthetic ideals of Art Deco and the late Vienna Secession. This sculpture depicts a nude dancer captured in motion, the figure rendered through an elegant composition characterised by great dynamism and formal refinement. The young woman appears balanced on a single point of support, her body leaning forward and her arms outstretched in a choreographic pose that conveys lightness and a sense of flight. The stylisation of forms, the simplification of volumes, and the pursuit of fluid, continuous lines fully reflect the sculptural language developed during the 1920s, a period in which dance became a favourite subject for numerous artists associated with Art Deco. The anatomy is rendered with great delicacy, avoiding any excessive detail in order to focus on the harmony of proportions and the elegance of movement. Particularly characteristic are the soft modelling of the body, the stylised face, and the geometric treatment of the hairstyle—elements that find parallels in other sculptures by Karl Perl dedicated to dancers, female figures, and modern allegories. The figure stands on an elegant cylindrical base of green marble that enhances the verticality of the composition and accentuates the decorative character of the whole. Signed by the artist, this work is an excellent example of Central European sculpture from the interwar period, in which the influence of modern dance, the appreciation of the female figure, and the pursuit of idealised beauty converge in a synthesis of great aesthetic sophistication.
