Description
18TH-CENTURY ITALIAN SCHOOL - Mars as a Roman Emperor
Carved bone. Height: 18 cm. This sculpture depicts Mars, the Roman god of war, portrayed as an emperor or general of classical antiquity. The figure is adorned with a plumed helmet, a muscular breastplate, a military cloak and a shield, and holds a sceptre topped with a hand, an attribute associated with authority and power. The composition reflects the taste for antiquity that characterised much of 18th-century Italian sculpture, when classical models were reinterpreted through a fully Neoclassical sensibility. Carved from bone with remarkable technical virtuosity, the work stands out for its meticulous detail, evident in the decoration of the armour, the rendering of the cloak’s folds, and the elaborate ornamentation of the helmet. The figure adopts an elegant and monumental pose that evokes the Roman sculptural models preserved and studied by artists and collectors of the period. The refined carving and high-quality modelling demonstrate the work of a skilled sculptor specialising in small-scale pieces intended for cabinets of curiosities or aristocratic collections. With its iconography, quality of execution and decorative character, this piece is an interesting example of 18th-century Italian sculpture inspired by the heroic and aesthetic ideals of classical antiquity.
