Description
MEXICAN COLONIAL SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY – Virgin and Child Carved and polychromed bone with a silver crown. Height: 24 cm. This sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary crowned as Queen of Heaven, holding the Infant Jesus on her left arm. The figure stands on a crescent moon and a plinth formed by clouds and polychrome cherub heads, iconographic elements closely associated with depictions of the Immaculate Conception and the Apocalyptic Virgin, which were widespread throughout the viceregal territories of New Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries. The composition is notable for the delicacy of the carving, the soft modelling of the faces, and the elegance of the folds in the garments, enhanced by traces of the original polychromy and gilding. The use of bone as a sculptural material reflects a highly refined artisanal tradition developed both in Spain and in the American territories, where these small-scale images were particularly prized for private devotion. The silver crown atop the figure reinforces its sacred and devotional character, constituting a valuable period piece befitting the importance of Marian devotion in New Spain. Based on its technical, iconographic and stylistic characteristics, the work can be placed within the context of 18th-century Mexican colonial sculpture, a period of extraordinary artistic splendour in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. The piece is a notable example of viceregal devotional imagery intended for domestic oratories and private collections.
