Description
The Four Seasons. Italian Neoclassical School. 20th century
Reconstituted stone with cement mortar. Dimensions: 202 x 42 x 42 cm. A sculptural group comprising four allegorical female figures representing the seasons, each identified by plant and agricultural attributes associated with the cycle of nature. The figures are depicted in elegant contrapposto poses, with delicate bodily movements and flowing drapery that partially envelops their bodies, creating a refined interplay of volumes and folds. Spring carries flowers and buds, Summer holds sheaves of wheat, Autumn displays bunches of grapes and harvested fruits, whilst Winter adopts a more withdrawn and contemplative attitude. The composition shows clear inspiration from classical and Renaissance Italian sculptural models, reinterpreted with decorative sensitivity for the ornamentation of gardens and architectural spaces. The quality of the modelling is evident in the softness of the faces, the rendering of the hair, and the harmonious integration of the symbolic elements accompanying each allegory. The sculptures rise from architectural pedestals that enhance their monumentality and allow them to be viewed from different angles. Stylistically, the ensemble is linked to the Neoclassical and Academic tradition developed in Italy between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, characterised by the revival of ideals of beauty inspired by Antiquity and by a balance between naturalism and formal elegance. The work is a remarkable example of decorative garden sculpture, combining seasonal symbolism, ornamental refinement and a striking presence. Dimensions: 202 x 42 x 42 cm.
