Description
Head of Athena Lemnian – Classical Greek School, Italian work. 20th century Modelled in terracotta. Dimensions: 28 x 18 x 22 cm. This sculpture, inspired by the celebrated Athena Lemnianus attributed to Phidias, is conceived as a refined recreation of one of the most admired models of classical Greek statuary. The piece depicts the bust of the goddess in a serene and contemplative pose, her face turned slightly in profile, with an expression of inner balance that embodies the ideals of beauty, harmony and rationality characteristic of Athenian classicism. Her hair is arranged in delicate, wavy locks gathered by a band that frames her forehead and enhances the geometric purity of her features. The composition is notable for the restraint of its volumes, the elegance of its proportions, and the formal refinement characteristic of models derived from 5th-century BC Greek sculpture. The terracotta surface sensitively reproduces the nuances of the original modelling, accentuating the transition between light and soft shadows that lend depth to the countenance. From an iconographic perspective, Athena embodies wisdom, the protection of cities, the arts, and military strategy—attributes that made her one of the most venerated deities of the Hellenic world. This interpretation revives the peaceful and contemplative image of the goddess, far removed from the usual warrior depiction, emphasising the supremacy of thought and intelligence. The work forms part of the tradition of museum-quality archaeological reproductions developed in Italy during the 20th century, intended to disseminate the great models of classical antiquity. Its presence combines decorative value, historical interest and the evocation of one of the highest aesthetic ideals of Western sculpture. Dimensions: 28 x 18 x 22 cm.
