Description
Mythological centaur. Italian Neoclassical school, a reproduction inspired by antiquity. 20th century
Carved Carrara marble. Dimensions: 68 x 50 x 20 cm. This sculpture in the round recreates the figure of the centaur, a hybrid creature from Greek mythology with a human torso and an equine body, conceived as a symbol of the duality between reason and instinct. The composition depicts the figure in a serene and contemplative pose, leaning against a tree-like formation whilst raising one arm to the shoulder, creating an elegant curve that runs along the entire silhouette. The anatomical modelling demonstrates a careful study of both human and animal musculature, integrating the two bodies with remarkable naturalness and formal balance. The bearded face, with its idealised features and restrained expression, evokes the models of classical sculpture, whilst the dynamic posture of the forelegs introduces a subtle sense of movement. The polished surface of the marble highlights the quality of the carving, allowing light to glide over the forms and emphasise the smoothness of the anatomical transitions. The work draws on the iconographic tradition inherited from Greco-Roman antiquity, where centaurs embodied both the primal force of nature and humanity’s capacity to master passions through intelligence and virtue. Its formal language is inspired by the Neoclassical ideals of harmony, proportion and idealised beauty, reinterpreted through 20th-century Italian craftsmanship in prestigious Carrara marble. The piece stands out for its technical refinement, compositional balance and powerful evocation of classical mythological imagery, making it a prime example of decorative sculpture inspired by archaeological imagery. Dimensions: 68 x 50 x 20 cm.
