Description
18th-Century Andalusian School – The Infant Jesus Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 54.5 x 21 x 19.5 cm. This sculpture depicts the Child Jesus standing, in a devotional style widely used in Spanish religious imagery of the 17th and 18th centuries. The figure is rendered with a marked sense of tenderness and spiritual intimacy, qualities that contributed to the extraordinary popularity of such representations in both convents and private oratories. The carving displays delicate anatomical detail, with particular attention paid to the modelling of the face, the arrangement of the hair, and the smooth articulation of the limbs – elements that reveal the sculptor’s technical skill. The polychromy reinforces the figure’s naturalism through warm flesh tones and meticulous attention to detail. The work belongs to the 18th-century Andalusian sculptural tradition, following in the footsteps of the great Baroque masters of Seville and Granada, whose influence spread throughout the century via numerous workshops specialising in the production of devotional images. These sculptures of the Christ Child were intended to foster an intimate and affectionate devotion, and became particularly prized by religious communities and private collectors. Owing to its stylistic characteristics, the quality of its execution and its refined polychromy, this image is a remarkable example of 18th-century Andalusian devotional sculpture.
