17th-century Valladolid School, Circle of Gregorio Fernández (Sarria, Lugo, 1576 – Valladolid, 1636) – Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Carved, polychromed, gilded and brocaded wood, with glass eyes. Dimensions: 96 x 47 x 32 cm. This sculpture depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most venerated saints in the Christian tradition, identifiable by her principal iconographic attribute, the steel wheel, the instrument of her martyrdom. The image is characterised by a marked sense of monumentality and profound devotion, qualities that directly evoke the finest tradition of 17th-century Castilian sculpture. The figure displays an elegant compositional arrangement, enriched by ample folds of pronounced volume and meticulous polychromy, which is combined with richly ornamented gilded and brocaded areas. The face displays a serene and contemplative expression, whilst the glass eyes serve to intensify the sense of naturalism and physical presence, one of the most characteristic features of Spanish Baroque sculpture. The work shows clear affinities with the output of the circle of Gregorio Fernández, regarded as the most important sculptor of the Valladolid school and one of the key figures of European Baroque sculpture.
