Description
19th-century French School – Saint Louis, King of France Gilded and polychrome terracotta. Dimensions: 33 x 14.5 x 9 cm. This sculpture depicts Saint Louis IX, King of France (1214–1270), one of the most revered figures of European Christian monarchy and a model of a pious and just sovereign. Canonised in 1297 by Pope Boniface VIII, Saint Louis was widely depicted in French sculpture and painting as a symbol of virtue, rectitude and the defence of the faith. The work shows him in royal attire and bearing the attributes of his royal dignity, following an iconography established in the Middle Ages and widely disseminated in subsequent centuries. Crafted in gilded and polychrome terracotta, the sculpture is notable for the delicacy of its modelling, the serene expressiveness of its face, and the careful treatment of its ornamental details, all of which serve to enhance its devotional and decorative character. During the 19th century, at the height of historicism and the renewed interest in medieval and religious art, numerous French workshops produced sculptures inspired by Gothic and Renaissance models, intended for both private devotion and collecting. This work belongs to this tradition, combining formal elegance, rich colour and remarkable craftsmanship. Its stylistic and technical characteristics make it an attractive example of 19th-century French religious sculpture inspired by one of the most emblematic figures in French history.
