Description
Head of the young Greek lover Antinous
Carved marble. Dimensions: 20 × 14 × 10 cm. This white marble sculpture depicts the idealised head of Venus (Aphrodite), inspired by models from classical Greco-Roman sculpture. The face displays soft, balanced features, with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes and delicately modelled lips, in keeping with the ideal of beauty associated with depictions of the goddess of love in ancient sculpture. The treatment of the hair, with its tight curls and deep grooves that create contrasts of light and shadow, recalls the style of Hellenistic and Roman female portraits derived from classical Greek prototypes. This type of representation was widespread in Roman sculpture as a reinterpretation of Greek models of Aphrodite, particularly those associated with the Praxiteles tradition and idealised types of goddesses and muses. Base not included. 19th–20th century
