Estimate €1,000 - €6,000
Description
Head of the Roman Emperor Hadrian Carved marble. Dimensions: 20 × 10 × 14 cm. This sculpture depicts the head of a bearded Roman emperor, modelled on the style of imperial portraiture from Classical Antiquity. The piece features short, curly hair with deep perforations and a full beard, characteristic features of Roman imperial portraiture that developed from the 2nd century AD onwards, particularly during the reign of Hadrian (117–138 AD), when the beard became a distinctive element of imperial portraiture inspired by the Greek philosophical tradition. The rendering of the hair and beard, with pronounced curls and perforations that create interplay of light and shadow, is reminiscent of imperial portraits from the Hadrianic or Antonine periods, which were widespread in Roman sculpture. The serene expression, the idealised modelling of the face, and the positioning of the neck are particularly reminiscent of official portraits of Emperor Hadrian. Base not included. 19th–20th century
