Description
Polychrome Virgin and Child. Spanish School. 16th century
Carved and polychrome wood. Dimensions: 26 x 9 x 8 cm. Devotional sculpture depicting the Virgin standing, holding the Child in her left arm, whilst the Child makes an affectionate gesture towards his mother’s face. The folds of the mantle, decorated with gilding, lend a sense of dynamism that contrasts with the serenity of the faces, with their soft features and pensive gaze. The polychrome, although worn, retains traces of its original vibrancy in the flesh tones and the gold, emphasising the luminous spirituality of the composition. A work typical of 16th-century Spain, rooted in the late Gothic tradition with Renaissance influences, in which maternal tenderness takes on a deeply symbolic theological and aesthetic value.
