Description
Exceptional incense burner in the shape of an armadillo, Colonial Peru, 18th–19th century Chiselled, openwork and cast from low-grade silver. Weight: 1,300 g. Dimensions: 28 x 20 cm. An extraordinary colonial incense burner in the shape of an armadillo, a magnificent example of South American viceregal metalwork. The piece features an articulated body with a hinged lid that allows access to the receptacle for burning copal, aromatic resins or incense. The shell, elaborately decorated with openwork, allows the aromatic smoke to escape, creating a striking visual effect during ceremonial use. The design incorporates numerous ornamental elements, including plant garlands, ribbons, figurative appliqués, and a small armed figure situated on the top lid. It also includes a small spoon for handling perfumes, attached by a chain, as well as a safety lock with a chain and decorative padlock suspended from the animal’s mouth. Incense burners played an important role in both religious ceremonies and the domestic life of the viceregal elite. As heirs to ancient indigenous traditions linked to purification through aromatic smoke, these traditions evolved during the colonial period into refined works of goldsmithing intended for private devotion and the adornment of aristocratic residences. Zoomorphic models, particularly armadillos and other Native American animals, constitute some of the most original creations of Andean colonial silversmithing. This particular piece stands out for the quality of its craftsmanship, the richness of its decoration and its excellent state of preservation, representing a remarkable testament to the encounter between indigenous artistic traditions and European goldsmithing as developed in the South American viceroyalties.
