Description
Pair of goblets with garlands of fruit, Neoclassical School, 20th century
Carved and polychromed marble. A pair of Neoclassical-inspired ornamental cups, set upon prismatic pedestals and decorated with relief appliqués evoking garlands of foliage and classical architectural motifs. The cups feature an exuberant composition of fruits, flowers and leaves, executed with remarkable detail, forming rich three-dimensional still lifes that crown each piece. The colour scheme of the marbles, in shades of ochre, cream, green and white, lends visual depth and a refined decorative effect, whilst the symmetry of the ensemble reinforces its monumental character. The carving demonstrates meticulous craftsmanship in the treatment of the surfaces, alternating polished areas with elements of great three-dimensional richness. The overall design recalls the ornamental motifs popularised by the Neoclassical movement and later reinterpreted in 19th- and 20th-century European decorative arts, where references to abundance, fertility and prosperity are integrated into compositions of great aesthetic impact. The ensemble stands out for its sculptural presence, formal balance and ability to define representative spaces with a distinctly decorative purpose.
