Monumental Spanish Renaissance palace gate featuring a medallion of a Jacobean pilgrim, Castilian School, 16th century
Wrought iron, gilded and polychromed, with gilded and polychromed wooden appliqués. Measures 379 x 458 cm. An exceptional monumental ironwork of architectural character belonging to the repertoire of the Spanish Renaissance of the first half of the 16th century. The structure features a rigorous symmetrical composition formed by turned bars of varying cross-sections, enriched with rings, knots and gilded plant motifs that lend rhythm and depth to the whole. The crowning element is formed by an elegant succession of wrought-iron scrolls decorated with flowers, stylised leaves and geometric motifs of classical inspiration, topped by polychrome ornamental vases and cups. A circular medallion painted with the figure of a pilgrim carrying a staff stands out on the central axis; this iconography is linked to the Jacobean tradition and the devotional symbolism of pilgrimage routes, an element that lends the piece its historical and iconographic uniqueness. The lower section features a rich tapestry of balustrades and interlaced plant motifs that create a refined openwork effect, whilst the side posts emphasise the monumentality and representative function of the work. The craftsmanship demonstrates the mastery of Castilian Renaissance ironwork workshops, capable of combining the structural strength of iron with complex decoration inspired by Plateresque and Humanist models. The preserved polychromy and gilding, despite restorations, losses and visible later additions, allow us to appreciate the sumptuous character that these grilles originally possessed, intended to demarcate privileged spaces in prestigious religious or civic buildings.
