Description
A pair of holy water fonts in carved green onyx, Mexico, 18th–19th century
Carved and polished green onyx. Dimensions: 22.5 x 26 x 20 cm each. An interesting pair of holy water fonts made of Mexican green onyx, carved from a single block of stone and decorated with Baroque-inspired moulded forms. They feature scalloped basins with a semi-spherical profile, topped by curvilinear backs, highlighting the natural beauty of the translucent veins and the greenish, ochre and honey tones characteristic of this prized ornamental material. Mexican onyx achieved widespread international popularity during the 20th century, being used to create decorative and religious objects for both domestic interiors and private chapels. The meticulous craftsmanship of the pieces and the rich colours of the stone give the set a striking decorative presence. They retain minor signs of use and slight restorations consistent with their age.
