Description
Monumental wall tapestry – Aubusson Manufactory, 18th century Wool and silk. Measures 260 x 200 cm. An exceptional Aubusson tapestry depicting a refined courtly scene set in an elegant, classically inspired space. The composition depicts two main figures engaged in a symbolic and intimate dialogue, in which a male figure – interpreted as a soothsayer or adviser – gently takes the hand of a lady reclining on a sumptuous bed. A large, gathered curtain acts as a theatrical frame, drawing attention to the main action, whilst classical architectural elements lend depth and visual balance to the composition. The figures, adorned in rich garments with flowing, elegant folds, convey serenity and sophistication through restrained gestures and exquisitely delicate expressions. The scene is surrounded by a lush border of intertwined flowers, leaves and fruits that enhances the ornamental effect and reveals the decorative style characteristic of 18th-century French tapestries. The tapestry stands out for its extraordinary technical quality, evident in the tonal gradations, the subtlety of the modelling, and the rich colour palette dominated by harmonious shades of blue, ivory and ochre. The work fully reflects the evolution of the Aubusson workshops following their reorganisation under French royal patronage, a period in which the introduction of specialist designers and higher-quality dyes significantly raised the artistic standard of their production. This tapestry is a magnificent example of the decorative and narrative refinement developed by French manufacturers, combining technical virtuosity, courtly elegance and a remarkable ability to transform painting into a complex textile language of great visual and symbolic impact. Dimensions: 260 x 200 cm.
