Description
Two-section cabinet with bone marquetry, attributed to Ferdinando Pogliani. Italian school. 19th century
Ebonised and veneered wood with rich inlays of carved and engraved bone. Measures 205 x 118 x 45 cm. An exceptional two-part cabinet modelled on the monumental styles of Italian historicism, characterised by a complex arrangement of doors, drawers and hidden compartments, enriched by exuberant marquetry decoration. The composition centres on a central door crowned by an arched finial, flanked by side sections adorned with Renaissance-inspired panels. The surface is profusely ornamented with classically inspired female figures, cherubs, trophies, foliage, arabesques, medallions and plant motifs, creating a refined chromatic contrast between the dark tones of the wood and the luminosity of the inlays. The upper central door provides access to an elaborate interior featuring small drawers adorned with gilt-bronze bust-shaped handles, demonstrating the attention to detail characteristic of luxury cabinetmaking. The pediment incorporates a medallion featuring a tower surrounded by foliage and smiling masks, an iconographic motif drawn from the Renaissance ornamental repertoire. The extraordinary technical quality of the marquetry, the precision of the decorative design, and the architectural balance of its volumes reveal the influence of the great Lombard workshops of the second half of the 19th century. Attributed to Ferdinando Pogliani, one of the most prominent Milanese cabinetmakers of his time, this piece of furniture is a remarkable example of historicist Italian decorative arts, where technical virtuosity, ornamental richness and monumentality combine to create a work of exceptional aesthetic presence and collector’s value. Dimensions: 205 x 118 x 45 cm.
