Description
Sculptural group in patinated bronze depicting Explorers of Canaan, Spain, 20th century
Patinated bronze on a marble plinth. Dimensions: 50 x 32 x 20 cm. Signed ‘Nacho’ and numbered 37/200. This sculptural group, inspired by the Bible, depicts two explorers of Canaan, an episode recounted in the Book of Numbers, when Moses sent several men to explore the Promised Land. The composition shows two male figures dressed in ancient-style military attire, one observing whilst the other gathers or examines the fruits of the land, alluding to the abundance of Canaan described in the biblical narrative. Crafted from patinated bronze, the work is notable for the meticulous anatomical modelling of the figures, the rich detail in the armour and clothing, and the dynamic composition achieved through the contrast between the figures’ different poses. The dark patina highlights the volumes and accentuates the monumental character of the group, which is presented on an elegant green marble plinth. Signed ‘Nacho’ and part of a numbered limited edition of 200 copies, this piece is an interesting example of contemporary historicist sculpture inspired by themes from the Old Testament.
