Description
“BOY” BUST, PATINATED BRONZE, MARIE-ANNE CRANNEY-FRANCESCHI, 20th CENTURY – FRANCE
Title: Bust of a Child. Material: Patinated bronze. Artist: Marie-Anne Crannrey Franceschi. Foundry: Susse Frères Editeurs, Paris. Period: Early 20th century. In good condition for its age and use. Country of origin: France. Provenance: Private collection. Dimensions: 17 x 16 x 10 cm. A spectacular patinated bronze bust of a child, signed by Marie-Anne Crannrey Franceschi, a French sculptor born in 1883. Its composition, facial features and the anatomical rigidity of the cap are directly inspired by Italian Renaissance busts of children, as classical busts were a common source of inspiration during this period. The tilt of the head and the melancholic or pensive expression on the face evoke a delicate emotional touch. The patinated bronze has a smooth finish that mimics the texture of skin, creating a contrast between the hardness of the material and the softness of the modelling. The dark patina highlights the details of the modelling. It bears the hallmark of the renowned Parisian foundry Susse Frères, established in 1758, which played a pivotal role in the production of high-quality bronze sculptures during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. Signed Cranney Franceschi and inscribed ‘Suisse Fes Edts Paris cire perdue’.
