Description
Bronze mortar and pestle with shell decoration. Spanish School. 17th century.
Cast bronze. Dimensions: 9 x 13 x 13 cm. A wide-mouthed mortar featuring alternating reliefs of shells and geometric elements, accompanied by a turned hand. The marine ornamentation alludes to symbols of fertility and protection, which were very common in the material culture of the 17th century. Its surface has an antique patina, accentuating the historical character and aesthetic value of the piece, which combines everyday utility with symbolic significance in Spanish bronze production.
