Description
Important Large Satsuma Vase, Japanese Meiji School, 19th Century
Satsuma porcelain, glazed and decorated with gilding. Measures 135 x 52 x 50 cm. An exceptionally large vase with an ovoid body and flared neck featuring a wavy rim, lavishly decorated with intricate geometric and floral motifs, as well as courtly scenes depicted within expansive figurative cartouches. The composition brings together numerous figures adorned in rich traditional garments within a palatial setting, accompanied by architectural, vegetal and symbolic elements executed with extraordinary detail. The gilt appliqués, delicate enamel work and sculptural handles featuring childlike figures are particularly noteworthy, enriching the piece’s monumental profile. The technical quality is evident in the precision of the design, the richness of colour and the profusion of ornamentation characteristic of Japanese Meiji-period pottery, intended for both the domestic market and luxury exports. The iconographic complexity and the refinement of its finish make this piece a prime example of Satsuma ceramics, prized for their extraordinary decorative capacity and high level of technical virtuosity. Dimensions: 135 x 52 cm.
