Description
Pair of blue parrots in Chinese porcelain, with an ormolu base, 19th century – China
Materials: Porcelain and gilt bronze base. Period: 19th century, Qing Dynasty. Country of origin: China. Provenance: Private collection. Dimensions: 23 x 16 x 12 cm. An exquisite pair of parrot sculptures in deep blue glazed Chinese porcelain with a smooth, glossy finish, characteristic of advanced Chinese ceramic techniques. They rest on a gilt bronze or ormolu base. The bodies feature smooth lines and simplified forms, showcasing a stylised interpretation of the animal. The design includes carved details on the base that resemble rocks or branches with holes on which the birds perch. In Chinese culture, birds – and parrots in particular – symbolise longevity and joy, and often carry auspicious connotations; they are commonly depicted on porcelain and textiles. This type of animal sculpture became popular in China during the 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the export of decorative objects to Europe.
