Description
Metallic lusterware plate. Possibly from Paterna, Valencia. Hispano-Arabic tradition. 19th century
Glazed ceramic with metallic lustre decoration. Measures 41 x 41 cm. A large circular plate decorated in copper tones with a complex composition of plant scrolls, stylised flowers and motifs inspired by Hispano-Muslim ornamental traditions. In the centre is a courtly scene comprising schematic figures surrounded by a dense decorative pattern covering almost the entire surface. The richness of the design and the rhythmic repetition of the elements create a visual effect of extraordinary ornamental intensity, characteristic of pieces inspired by medieval Valencian metallic lusterware. The white glaze serves as a backdrop for the golden highlights, recreating the luminous qualities that made Hispano-Arabic pottery famous. The piece demonstrates the 19th-century historicist interest in the revival of Mudéjar models and constitutes an attractive example of the continuity of Valencian ceramic traditions within modern decorative production.
