253 Jean BELLEGAMBE (Douai, c. 1470 – c. 1534) Saint Bishop with a Praying Figure Panel, arched at the top Height: 68 cm Width: 29 cm Unframed Missing sections This previously unpublished panel formed the left-hand panel of a triptych, a feature of which is often to incorporate trompe l’oeil grey-scale sculptures when the panels were closed. We propose that on the reverse side was the portrait of Charles de Saint-Radegonde, known as Charles Coguin, abbot d’Anchin, by Bellegambe, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (INV 32.100.125), which is identical in shape and dimensions to ours; it is therefore likely to be the reverse side of this panel. Charles Sterling had drawn a parallel between the work at the Metropolitan Museum and the ‘Sainte Barbe’ in grisaille ( Christie’s auction of 24 June 2004, lot no., acquired by the Musée de la Chartreuse de Douai in 2011).
