12 GARNESSON at the Palais Royal
A rare travel kit comprising a walnut burl box with brass inlays, marked ‘GC’, the interior lined with red and green Empire-style leather embossed with a small iron stamp, containing:
- seven bottles, some with vermeil lids
- a folding razor with a mother-of-pearl handle
- a mother-of-pearl seal marked GC
- sewing scissors with a gold (damaged)
- two spools of thread in their cylindrical mother-of-pearl decorated cases
- a letter opener with a mother-of-pearl handle
- a penholder
- a pair of mother-of-pearl tweezers (damaged)
- a thimble in gold and turquoise cabochons
- ear pick
- penholder
- 10-inch folding ruler
- clothes brush
- shaving brush
- mother-of-pearl travel thread case
The base of the box reveals a secret drawer with a mechanism containing a small multi-purpose knife with a mother-of-pearl handle, probably added later.
Hallmarks: second rooster (Paris 1809–1819) for the vermeil pieces and ram’s head (Paris, 1819–1838) for the gold pieces.
