Description
39 China: An exceptional large porcelain jar with a lid, decorated with flowers painted in shades of blue. The decoration was probably intended for the Ottoman market. High-fire blue decoration, known as ‘under-glaze’. Condition : a chip on the lid, which has been repaired. The Fô dog-shaped fretel is made of wood and replaces an original porcelain fretel in the shape of a stylised lotus bud. Qing Dynasty, Kangxi period (1662–1722), early 18th century. Height: 83 cm. Max. diameter: 46 cm For a similar piece, see: Auguste the Strong’s (1670–1733) Museum of Chinese and Japanese Porcelain in Dresden (Germany). The collections of Augustus the Strong, former Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, include a monumental set comprising 10 oversized vases featuring this distinctive decoration. There is one notable difference: six of the ten vases in Augustus the Strong’s set feature this decoration with subtle highlights of red and a few additions of gilded motifs.
