A pupil of Luc-Olivier Merson at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Henri Barnoin established himself as one of the leading artists depicting Brittany in the early 20th century, and was appointed Official Painter to the Navy in 1926. Based in Concarneau, he drew constant inspiration from the bustle of the harbours, maritime activities and the shifting light that characterise the Breton coastline. Our harbour view reveals the artist’s keen sensitivity to maritime atmospheres, combining the vigour of the drawing with subtle effects of light inherited from his Post-Impressionist approach.
