Description
339 Jan Baptiste DE JONGHE (1785–1844)
Herd in a Landscape
Oil on panel, signed lower right and indistinctly dated
33 x 45 cm
De Jonghe studied in Antwerp under B.-P. Ommeganck and inherited from his master a taste for rural landscapes animated by animals. The painter soon received official commissions, notably six views of the Ardennes, commissioned by Leopold I. Over the course of his career, De Jonghe moved from idyllic and romantic landscapes inspired by the 17th-century Dutch tradition to a more realistic and open approach, in which the sky and the horizon became the key elements of compositions firmly rooted in real places.
