357 Louis ROBBE (1806–1887) Shepherd and his Flock Oil on canvas, signed lower left 34.5 x 50.5 cm Born in Kortrijk, Louis-Marie Robbe came from a family of painters who delighted in depicting the bucolic scenes and rural landscapes of their native region. It was under the tutelage of the master animal painter Eugène Verboeckhoven that the artist learnt to structure his compositions and to bring sheep, kids and cows to life within them, in harmony with an idealised natural world.
