A Parisian artist, Victor Gilbert established himself in the late 1870s as a naturalist painter, devoting himself to street, market and café scenes, particularly around Les Halles. A keen observer of the common people, he celebrated in his paintings the dignity of the working class and the lively atmosphere of the cities, whilst evolving, under the influence of the Impressionists, towards a lighter and more luminous palette. Childhood also became a favourite subject of his: he depicted it with tenderness and social realism, alternating between gentleness and accuracy.
