Exhibition: 1911 Salon, Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées, no. 703 in the catalogue.
A pupil of Eugène Carrière and Alfred Roll, Gaston Hochard made a name for himself at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries through his genre scenes, urban landscapes and compositions inspired by everyday life, exhibiting regularly at the Salon from 1890 onwards. Presented at the 1911 Salon, our painting reflects his interest in folk traditions and regional figures, rendered with great attention to human presence and the truth of character. A preparatory study entitled ‘Peasant from Auvergne Playing the Hurdy-Gurdy’ is held at the Musée Léon Dierx, having entered the collection thanks to a donation by Mrs Hochard in 1914.
