Description
382 Achille LA NIÈCE (active in the 19th century)
View of the Carrousel du Louvre, circa 1888
Oil on canvas
Signed lower left
Countersigned and dated on the reverse
115 x 167 cm
Three repairs to the sky, on the reverse.
A rare depiction of late 19th-century Paris, this imposing view of the Place du Carrousel features the Arc du Carrousel in the foreground, with the facades of the Louvre stretching out in the background. The artist has also depicted the Monument to Gambetta, unveiled in 1888 to a design by Louis-Charles Boileau and featuring sculptures by Jean-Paul Aubé, a valuable historical reference point allowing the work to be dated to around this time. Our painting is a remarkable testimony to a feature of Paris that has since disappeared: the Monument to Gambetta has since given way to the famous Louvre Pyramid.
