A travelling painter, André Maire devoted much of his life to discovering and depicting the landscapes and cultures of distant lands such as India, Egypt and Madagascar. However, his work also gives prominence to Western subjects, particularly during his Venetian period, which began in 1922, came into its own from 1936 onwards and continued until 1944. Inspired by Tiepolo, Canaletto and, above all, Guardi, he developed a free and evocative pictorial style, characterised by rapid brushstrokes and slender silhouettes brought to life by harmonies that are by turns luminous and profound.
